أقام نادي اللغة الإنجليزية بكلية اللغات والترجمة عملا تطوعيا استمر لمدة ثلاثة أيام تشارك فيه مع النادي التطوعي بجامعة الملك خالد ومع وزارة البيئة والمياه والزراعة.  وفي التفاصيل، فقد قام نادي اللغة الإنجليزية بكلية اللغات والترجمة ضمن أنشطته الطلابية بعمل تطوعي بدأ يوم الخميس الموافق 19/6/1441هـ واستمر لمدة ثلاثة أيام بمعدل ثلاث ساعات يوميا، وذلك بتعليق 50 بيت للطيور على الأشجار وبغرس 50 شتلة من نبات السدر في منتزه دلغان وهو أحد منتزهات منطقة عسير.  وقد تم هذا العمل التطوعي بالشراكة مع النادي التطوعي بجامعة الملك خالد بريادة الأستاذ/ ياسر السالمي وبالتعاون مع وزارة البيئة والمياه والزراعة وبحضور سعادة مدير إدارة منتزهات منطقة عسير المهندس/ مريح الشهراني.  وقد جاء هذا العمل تحقيقا لشعار فريق العمل التطوعي بنادي اللغة الإنجليزية أثر يبقى.

  Under the auspices of Asir Gov. Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz, the Sports Governance Forum was held on Jan. 20, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Abha Palace Hotel. The main purpose of the two-session forum, hosted by Abha Sports Club, was to gather key stakeholders from around the Kingdom and from abroad to learn the unique challenges of sports governance, drive new initiatives, and implement coordinated solutions. Faculty of Languages and Translation Dean, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, and Dr. Eyhab Bader Eddin, MITI, were provided with a special invitation. Dr. Bader Eddin was tasked with providing simultaneous interpreting in the two language combination, i.e. English and Arabic. He translated for the Arab guests what was said by the 2 English guest speakers who in turn got the English translation of what speakers said in Arabic, all done simultaneously. At the end of the Forum, Dean Al-Melhi provided consecutive interpreting for the questions posed to the English speakers before the lens of a TV channel.   Dr. Bader Eddin first provided simultaneous interpretation for Director of Risk and Governance at Everton FC, Paul McNicholas. Mr. McNicholas generated a lot of interest with his vast background in the Premier League, the top tier of English Football. Specifically, he manages all of the processes in place to protect Everton FC, a professional football club based in Liverpool, England. Mr. McNicholas's presentation was titled 'The English Experience in the Governance of Sports Clubs'. After, interpretation was provided for Real World Academies Managing Director, James Tucker. Mr. Tucker emphasized the importance of governance in education and sports clubs, citing examples from different academies from different parts of the world like Spain, etc. His presentation was titled 'The Importance of Governance in Education and Training in Sports Clubs'.   The event included a notable selection of speakers that included: Advisory (Shura) Council member Dr. Muhammad Al-Abbas; Dr. Marea Al-Habbash from King Khalid University; Dr Ahmed Al-Hadithi, President of Abha Sports Club; Advisor to the Chairman of the Board of the General Authority for Sports, Abdulaziz Al-Masaad; Director of the Internal Audit Office at Dubai Sports Council, Khaled Al-Shezawi; Dr Muqbel bin Jdei, Professor of Sports Marketing and Development; Lawyer Fahad Muhammed.   Dean Al-Melhi recognized Dr. Badder Eddin for his community service commitment and asserted that the Faculty of Languages and Translation was honored to receive the task to interpret to a live audience and national broadcast for the guest speakers. It is worth mentioning that simultaneous interpreting is considered a type of interpreting that tops the list of other modes or types of interpreting in terms of difficulty. This is so because the simultaneous interpreter has to master the faculty of splitting senses in that he listens, understands, analyzes and then encodes the source text message in the other language, all in real-time. Simultaneous interpreting is seen as very hard because it involves 3 layers of problems: A) speed with which an interpreter must make decisions regarding lexical choice, grammar usage, etc, B) enormous tension and pressure to keep up with the rapid flow of spoken language, and C) the background knowledge necessary for instant recall, Dr. Bader Eddin mentioned. Last but not least, it is worth mentioning that Dr. Bader Eddin has provided and continues to provide simultaneous interpreting at high-profile events for high-profile dignitaries in Syria, European Union, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Dr. Bader Eddin is technically called 'FREE Simultaneous Interpreter' in that he has NO access to the text or speaker's notes, and the interpretation he provided was performed with NO look-ahead, under severe time pressure and with no safety net. The difficulty of the interpreting mode stems from the fact that the interpreter has little or no chance to look things up or go back on what he has said: the first pass is final. The interpreter has to tune in to the speaker's train of thought, expressing it precisely and as naturally as possible. Although the listeners do not need to know how this process works, they still expect clear and faithful running speech.   During the week of October 20, 2019, the English Club organized a trip to the 'Excellent Educational Schools' located in Abha. Dean Abdullah Al-Melhi, English Club Director Faisal Alfadhil, and club member Ali Al-Jasser represented the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT).   After a warm welcome by the packed audience of primary school students and Principal, Abdullah Al-Mualwi, Dean Al-Melhi thanked the school for inviting the FLT and the English Club. Dean Al-Melhi began with his speech stressing the importance of education and the many ways in which learning the English language can benefit them. He noted that learning is a lifelong process and that they should take their studies very seriously if they want to be successful in life. Following the dean, Director Alfadhil delivered a speech in which he spoke about the importance of hard work. He said, “Like many of you, when I was young, playing with my friends was more important than studying. However, as I got older, I understood the importance of school and learning English.” Principal Al-Mualwi then commented that the FLT representatives are role models and an inspiration to these young students to embrace education as the biggest opportunity in their young lives. He then awarded all of the FLT representatives, as mentioned above, a plaque recognizing their effort and commitment to education.   The FLT is committed to serving the community and encouraging advanced education among all segments of the population.   The Deanship of Community Service and Continuing Education has recently collaborated with the Faculty of Languages and Translation to deliver the 2nd annual 4-week intensive English language course designed for Ministry of Education (MOE) teachers.   With this program, FLT and Al Khaleej Training and Education teachers provided English language instruction to nearly 90 public school teachers at the primary, secondary, and high school levels. The purpose of the program was to deliver an English language refresher course to public school teachers. The curriculum was geared to both beginners and those expecting to take the IELTS exam in the near future.   This program was sponsored by the Vice Presidency of Academic Affairs, Faculty of Languages and Translation Dean, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, and Dean of Community Service and Continuing Education, Dr. Omar Alwan Aqeel. ELC Director, Fahad Al-Shehri, supervised operations under the tutelage of Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Yahya Asiri.   After passing an entrance exam, governed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), nearly 90 students joined one of four different groups reflecting their English language proficiency.   Vice Rector of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Merzin Al-Shahrani, attended the opening ceremony. He congratulated the participants and thanked the faculty and staff who made the program possible. "I congratulate all of you attending this program. You have wonderful instructors that I am sure you will learn a lot from. This 2nd annual program will be even better than the first, and we hope to expand and improve the effort each succeeding year," he said.   Representing the Faculty of Languages and Translation were Hassan Costello and Dr. Michael Hadzantonis. Representing Al Khaleej Training and Education were Bryan Bell and Rocio Munoz.   The Deanship of Community Service and Continuing Education recognizes the importance of this program and is committed to its continued success. On March 31st, Habib Bin Zaid Elementary School in Abha hosted Dean, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, and Dr. Eyhab Bader Eddin, MCIL, CL. Many of the students, along with some of their teachers and administrators, participated. The purpose of the program was to introduce the children to higher education and foreign language usage.   School Principal, Mr. Mohammed Farhan, first welcomed the FLT visitors to the enthusiastic crowd. After leading the students through a few linguistic exercises to pique their interest, Dean Al-Melhi and Dr. Bader Eddin transitioned their presentation into the fundamentals of translation. Of course, interpreting and translating are extremely complex disciplines that would be of little interest to most children. Undaunted, the FLT representatives simplified the concepts and broke down the process of translation into rudimentary components. Dean Al-Melhi and Dr. Bader Eddin used a 'down- to- earth' method, complete with simple examples that helped the students understand the need for and methods of translating. The simple and interesting method of introducing the topic came into fruition when face-to-face classroom interaction was observed.   Once the students were fully engaged, the FLT professors gave a brief PowerPoint presentation summarizing the importance, history, and methods of translation. They also showed the students the differences between simultaneous and consecutive interpretation. After reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of each method, the students voted on their preferred translation method.   Dean Melhi stated that, 'It is wonderful having the opportunity to reach out to young people. These grade school students represent unlimited potential, and the future of our nation. One day, some of them will definitely fill our shoes as professors, probably at the same faculty we are representing today, and they would bring back today's event. Vivid, sweet and warm or dim, distant and fading, their memory of today's fleeting visit will come flooding back in their memory. It is important to instill the desire for higher education and life-long learning at an early age. These cooperative outreach initiatives help inspire students, and present some of the career opportunities available to them as they mature'.   Dr. Bader Eddin echoed Dean Al-Melhi's sentiments in noting that keeping the Kingdom's youth engaged and hungry for learning is an absolute necessity. 'We want to show the children that universities are safe and welcoming places that help people learn more and do more in life. One abiding memory of mine dates back to childhood days back in Kuwait where I was sitting at a desk as a pupil. Evoking scenes from childhood days is retained for good with a delicate scent lingering in the air of memory', he added wallowing in a wave of nostalgia for childhood years. Dr. Bader Eddin then showed the students a series of short videos and multi-media presentations that reinforced the live lesson.   The Faculty of Languages and Translation is dedicated to community service and taking an active role in achieving educational and socioeconomic objectives at both the regional and national levels.
