English Club

The English Club paid a visit to the 14th Book and Information Fair to enhance student reading skills and spread the awareness of books and knowledge. The group consisted of the Dean's Assistant, Dr. Suad Al-Qahtani, the College Coordinator of Activities and Social Services, Mrs. AmatulHafeez Alvi, the College Coordinator of Public Relations and Media, Ms. Aisha Alvi, some faculty staff and 14 students. The group visited many book corners and purchased numerous books in both English and Arabic. After the visit, Dr. Suad Al-Qahtani held a meeting with the students to listen to their opinions about the visit. The students expressed their gratitude to her for availing them to unique opportunities that are beneficial. "The book fair is amazing, the dean's assistant and lecturers are with us, and we really enjoyed and learned, " Amani said. " So beautiful, I found every book I wanted," Sara said.  "Honestly it is wonderful, there are books that suit all ages, there are different and unique books," Taif said. "The books are so amazing! The treatment is nice and quite different from a couple of book fairs I visited before," Enas said. "Had a great time with our students and colleagues, a vote of thanks goes to the Dean's Assistant, Dr. Suad, for supporting such activities, and trips which intend to develop our student's linguistic and social ability and thanks to KKU for arranging this successful fair," Mrs.AmatulHafeez, Activities and Social Services Coordinator said. Under the supervision of the Vice Presidency of Student Affairs, the Faculty of  Languages and Translation (Female Campus) participated in the program "Proud Of My Femininity" which aimed at strengthening the instinctual feminine nature and fighting the unnatural behaviors. The English Club presented a corner titled "Proud of My Look and Proud of My Innateness."  The corner included different models, brochures, and slogans. Under the supervision of Dean, Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi, celebrations to commemorate the KSA's 87th National Day were held yesterday (9/27/2017) in Building B, Auditorium 5, where students, faculty, and staff alike enjoyed a historical account of the Kingdom's history, poetry recitals, and a new student orientation program. Held in conjunction with the Annual Orientation Program, the celebration also aimed to acquaint students with the range of services available to them, academic integrity standards, and insight into what University life would be like in the Faculty of Languages and Translation. Al-Melhi: We are lucky to have the Custodians of Saudi Arabia from King Abdulaziz, may Allah have mercy on him, to King Salman. Every Royal Majesty of this great nation has done his best to focus on the development of the Saudi citizen, the country itself, and education.  Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi stressed that the National Day celebration is a unifying cornerstone event. He emphasized that it gives them an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of the previous generations who set the groundwork for the stability and prosperity we all enjoy today. "We are lucky to have the Custodians of Saudi Arabia from King Abdulaziz, may Allah have mercy on him, to King Salman. Every Royal Majesty of this great nation has done his best to focus on the development of the Saudi citizen, the country itself, and education." Dr. Al Melhi added that the central theme of the FLT's Saudi National Day celebration is to invest in the students for a promising future. He encouraged them to be active, to study hard, and to remember what they learned in orientation to avoid the major pitfalls and mistakes of their Freshman Year. In an effort to drive the message home, Dr. Yahya Asiri, Vice Dean, explained that the main theme of the FLT's National Day Celebration and Annual Orientation Program was chosen to instill excellent values in our students who will participate in the nation's development and give back to society upon graduation.  He also urged students to follow the 'Code of Conduct' and to aim high in their studies. Immediately following Dr. Asiri, Chairman, Dr. Munassir Al Hamami, provided a detailed tour of the FLT website and social media accounts showing students where they could find their study plan and contact the faculty. He urged students to be aware that the transition from high school to university is not an easy one; it requires commitment and hard-work. The program this year was very productive covering all issues concerning the University. Dr. Basim Kanan, Academic Advisor, followed Dr. Al Hamami's presentation and conveyed the most important issues that students will face as well as the different ways to get in touch with him or other faculty members. Following after was Director of Student Activities, Hassan Faya Asiri, who encouraged students to join the English Club and participate in its activities. He advised students to focus on the big picture and to avoid distractions. Ahmad Al Otaibi is a student at the Faculty of Languages and Translation, and he is a journalist at Aseer News. Lately, due to his continues press and social media coverage for the Abha Charity Association and as a representative of Aseer News, he received an appreciation certificate from the Governor of the Asir Region, HRH Prince Faisal bin Khalid bin Abdulaziz. "Ahmad sets an example of how a college student can actively contribute to the community while continuously striving for academic success," said Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi, FLT Dean. Under the supervision of Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi, Dean, and represented by Dr. Abdulkhaleq Al Qahtani, Vice Dean of Higher Studies,  the English Club held an orientation for all first level students on March 5, 2017. Dr. Abdulkhaleq Al Qahtani, Dr. Mohammed Assiri, Vice Dean of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Munassir Alhamami, Chair of the English Department, Dr. Basim Kanaan, Academic Advisor, and Hassan Asiri, Director of Student Activities, presented the program. They all stressed critical points to success that included but were not limited to, helpful resources, policies, and general strategies. Dr. Abdulkhaleq Al Qahtani added that the purpose of the orientation program was to engage students and to introduce them to campus resources and opportunities. He further reasoned that a successful transition for students from their previous environment into the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) is paramount. This year’s orientation leaders were eager to share their experiences. "Orientation is the next step for students in joining the KKU FLT community," said Hassan Asiri, Director of Student Activities. “It was an opportunity to meet new students. For many of them, this was a great chance to ask questions,” said Haitham Hawi, President of the English Club. Ahmed Al Otaibi, Vice President of the English Club, remembers going through the orientation program when he first started and learned how to get involved. “I like providing assistance where it is needed,” Al Otaibi said. “Also, I wanted to let new students know about the English Club so that they can join us.” In conclusion, Dr. Abdulkhaleq Al Qahtani emphasized the importance of orientation as being key to student success. The English Club provided a platform for a structured, intelligent, and open debate in the month of December 2016. The purpose of the debate (Social Media Celebrities) was to build critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.  Overall, many of those who attended in the audience applauded the civic awareness and engagement displayed by the debaters.  First place winner, Khalid Al Shehri (against the motion), stated “We live in a world which relies on the online world more than the reality. We need more role models, but a role model may exert a bad influence. We need to be aware of that and keep that in mind.” Second place winner, Yasser Al Shahrani (for the motion), stated “Social media celebrities are like a mirror with two sides. If it is clean, it will reflect something good and vice versa.”  Prof. Habib Abdesslem and Dr. Omer Sultan were the judges of the event and applauded the students for their persuasive arguments, fluency, and overall accuracy. Abdullah Asiri, Director of Student Activities, congratulated all students who participated in recent developments and looks forward to seeing the English Club host more in the upcoming semester. On October 17, 2016, the English Club held a reception in the foyer of the college to spread awareness of the many activities planned for the semester. The event was lively, and it attracted over 50 students to register with the club and upcoming events. Vice Dean, Dr. Ali Alamir, Chairman, Dr. Munassir Alhamami, and Abdullah Asiri, Student Activities Director, presided over the event and interacted with all those in attendance. A debate competition was organized by Faculty of Languages and Translation which was held on April 13, 2016. The topic was Excessive Use of Technology has Paralyzed Humans in Many Ways.  The debaters who spoke for the motion were Muhammad Salem Ashahri, Abdur Rahim Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Aweed Al Amari, Mohammad Ali Al Qahtani and Abdullah Ali Al Qahtani. They put emphasis on the word ‘excessive.' They pointed out that they were not against technology, only its excessive use. Those who were against the motion were Musab Mohammad Al Shadah, Fahad Mohammad Asiri, Yasser Ali Al Shahrani, Omer Mohammad Jama and Khalid Amer Alshehri. They focused on our dependence on technology in our real life.  They emphasized that without technology we are almost helpless. Both the teams came up with interesting ideas. Although the team for the motion won the competition, the best speaker was Khalid Amer Al Shehri, who was the leader of the team against the motion. There was a panel of judges comprising two members – Mr. Willem D. Jager and Mr. Mathew Paul, who skillfully and meticulously evaluated the debaters’ performance and decided on the winner.  Dr. Fahad Otaif, in his speech, talked about their performance and how to improve it. He shared his views on the excessive use of technology. The occasion was also graced by Dr. Mutab Al Qarni, Chairman of the Department of English, who, in his concluding speech, talked about the importance of such an extracurricular activity and how it helped to improve English. He praised the debaters pointing out the fact that they had spoken exceptionally well although the topic was slightly challenging for them.   Dr. Mohammad Osman headed the organizing committee. The other team members were Dr. Nurul Islam, Dr. Nisar Ahmed Koka, Mr. Mohammad Adil, Dr. Omer Sultan, Dr. Basim Kanaan, and Mr. Salahuddin Abdul Rab who spent more than a month training the debaters. It is worth mentioning that Mr. Khalid Mater, in cooperation with English Club, coordinated his efforts in arranging prizes and certificates for the debaters and the judges. All the members of English Club also worked hard during the event to make it a success. Overall, the debate was a great success. The Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Translation, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, presided over the commencement of the new English Club Headquarters located in room A/3/35. He was accompanied by Dr. Nasir Qemishan, Vice Dean for Student Activities, and Mr. Yasir Salimy, Director of Student Clubs. Mr. Ibrahim Alasmari, Director of Student Activities, gave an opening speech and congratulated the direction of the faculty. The KKU English Club recently organized an exciting and informative trip to Makkah and Jeddah. The students took part in a full program of activities while visiting a variety of locations and institutions. The highlights of the trip included: Visiting Makkah and performing Umrah Viewing the project in Makkah called "Assalam Alik Ayoha Annabi" (PBUH) Touring King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah Visiting Kaust's "Museum of Science & Technology in Islam."
