A Metacognitive and Social Strategy to Improve Content Lecture Comprehension

Dr. Abdul Wahed Al Zumor spoke about the improvement of lecture comprehension in content courses in the English department curriculum at a seminar organized by the Language Research Center of King Khalid University held on November 28, 2016. In his presentation, which was titled A Metacognitive and Social Strategy to Improve Content Lecture Comprehension, he highlighted a recently completed research project he had conducted on how content lectures can be made more comprehensible to learners. He first showed the distinction between direct and indirect strategies, the latter of which involves metacognitive and social strategies. He, while pinpointing some fundamental issues related to learning and teaching at the Faculty of Languages and Translation that requires proper investigation, showed student grade statistics, problems associated with comprehending lectures, and challenges involved relating to students’ perspective.  Through his research study, he illustrated remarkable results that showed students’ attitude towards content lectures, problems with teachers and teaching, and learners’ lack of background knowledge. We are proud to announce that Dr. Al Zumor's research has been accepted for publication as a chapter in a book likely to be published soon by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. The session was followed by a very interactive question-answer session. Some of the participants also shared their views on effective lecture comprehension. Staff Orientation Program

The Faculty of Languages & Translation organized an orientation program for female teachers in the month of November. The FLT has redoubled its efforts to ensure the outcomes of the education system are in line with not only the market needs but also educational outcomes of the NCAAA. The FLT is committed to providing opportunities for all through high-quality training. As such, a series of presentations aligned with our desired educational outcomes were delivered as mentioned below: · Mr. Abdullah Al-Rezgi, Director of the English Language Center, welcomed all participants and expressed his deep appreciation for the orientation program. · Dr. Ismail Al-Refai, Director of the Language Research Center, gave a detailed presentation on the center and its primary activities. He encouraged teachers to participate in the center activities actively. · Dr. Abdul Wahid Al Zumor, Head of the Academic Development & Quality Unit, FLT, presented a detailed presentation on NCAAA and the quality unit. · Mr. Mohsin Raza Khan, Supervisor of E-Learning Unit, FLT, gave a detailed presentation on "Incorporating Blackboard in EFL teaching." · Mr. Jawed Ahmed, ELC General Coordinator, talked about the course plans of the 011/012/015  courses. The presenters of the fortnightly seminars were awarded certificates of appreciation at the Certificate Award Ceremony held on April 25, 2016, which was arranged by the Language Research Center of the College of Languages and Translation. Five speakers had presented their papers during the first semester of the academic year 1436-37. Certificates were awarded to the following esteemed presenters: Mr. Mohsin Raza who had spoken about E-Course Design with Special Reference to Quality Matters Rubric Mr. Eyhab Bader Eddin for the presentation titled Pragmatic Equivalents in Translation Dr. Ali Alamir for the presentation based on his research study called Social Presence of Saudi EFL Students during their Online Interactions in Forums Ms. Najlaa A. Al Asbali for the presentation based on her project called An Investigation into Some Semantic Problems Inherent in the Translation of the Holy Quran  Mr. Mohammad Siraj who had shared his ideas about Effective Online Teaching Dr. Nurul Islam for his presentations titled World Englishes and How to Avoid Plagiarism.  There were five more speakers who had given presentations during the second semester. Certificates were awarded to the following esteemed presenters: Mr. Salahud Din Abdul Rab for his presentation on NLP and Speed Language Learning Dr. Fahad Otaif for the presentation  based on his research paper titled Metaphorical Framing of Media Discourse and the Representation of the Other Mr. Erich Beer for sharing his ideas about English-teaching-related Application of Microsoft Excel, Blackboard, and WhatsApp Dr. Nisar Ahmed Koka for his presentation titled Cross-cultural Communication and Subsequent Diffusion of Loanwords: A case of Arabic-Kashmiri Linguistic Borrowing  Dr. Mohammad Osman for the presentation titled Short Stories – a Source of Learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for Beginners. A Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis of Metaphors in Press Discourse

Dr. Fahad Otaif, Vice Dean of Academic Development and Quality, presented his paper at a seminar organized by the Language Research Center of King Khalid University held on February 15, 2016. His presentation was titled Metaphorical Framing of Media Discourse and the Representation of the Other: A Corpus-based Critical Discourse Analysis of Metaphors in the Press Discourse.  He states in his abstract,  “This paper addresses the metaphorical framing of a particular news event in media discourse, i.e. the British press and BBC news website, and how it contributes to the overall lexical and intertextual cohesion of a discourse topic as well as the representation of the other.” (Otaif, F. 2016) He primarily highlighted Media Discourse in which he showed how metaphors play a significant role in media discourse. He pinpointed the fact that metaphors have long been undermined or neglected in the field of discourse analysis. He particularly pointed out the lack of investigation into the use of metaphors in discourse as a form of cross-cultural communication that represents social minorities in Britain.  During his presentation, he talked about an interesting phenomenon in discourse–intertextuality. Dr. Otaif, while explaining intertextuality in discourse, showed how metaphors could limit understanding and perception.
