On March 10, 2020, E-Learning Unit Supervisor, Mohsin Khan, delivered a university-wide workshop titled 'Transformation to Full E-Learning'. The workshop, under the supervision of the Deanship of E-Learning's Training Manager, Mohammed Jarallah, was developed to ensure faculty members, whether they are seasoned experts or first-time users, understand the essentials of posting documents, assignments, quizzes, tests, videos, and discussion boards. Perhaps the most important part of the webinar, which was attended by nearly 200 faculty members, was the in-depth review of the specific features and functionality of Blackboard Collaborate and Blackboard Ultra.   With the evolving public health situation presented by the Coronavirus (COVID-19), proper precautions were put in place for our teachers at King Khalid University to increase their online teaching presence. "A huge part of your success will be leveraging the technology we have made available to you. Blackboard Collaborate is a synchronous video conferencing tool that you can add files to and share your screen. I recommend that you use the virtual whiteboard to interact," said Mr. Khan. He also looked at both the 'Collaborate: Ultra Experience' and the 'Collaborate: Original Experience'. The main difference between the options – which are both offered – is that 'Ultra' is an entirely web-based interface while 'Original' requires that Java be installed.   As course content, course design, and instructor readiness are essential to implementing the best practices of online pedagogy, Mr. Khan also introduced participants to the eight standards of Quality Matters, which will ensure faculty members achieve the university's goals for delivering quality online learning. This set the foundation for the suggested online classroom model, which places focus on not just the platform, but also interactivity.   Of noteworthy mention, an adapted version of this webinar was delivered to teachers of the English Language Center on Wednesday, March 11, 2020. Commenting on future webinars, English Department Chairman, Dr. Munassir Alhamami, said, "We plan to hold a similar webinar this Monday. You will learn best practices, available tools, and where to find support for teaching your classes online.   With the commitment to advancing the practice of quality teaching, the Women's Academic Development and Quality Committee organized the "Usefulness and Learnability in Teaching Vocabulary to ESL/EFL Students" workshop on Monday, 24 February 2020. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Shanjida Halim, Ms.Tanzina Halim and Dr. Rizwana Wahid. The workshop was tailored to new teachers, graduate students, and teachers of the Bachelor of Arts in English program who have not taught ENG 214 Vocabulary Building 1 or ENG 219 Vocabulary Building 2. The objectives of the workshop were as follows:   Importance of vocabulary as ''the building blocks of a language ''and some basic principles; Types of Vocabulary; Incidental vs. Intentional Acquisition/Learning of Vocabulary; What to teach while teaching vocabulary; Different/Various ways of presenting and Teaching Vocabulary; Selection of Vocabulary: Two Criteria: Usefulness and Learnability in teaching vocabulary; Tips/Suggestions on promoting long-term retention.   The workshop mainly focused on the selection of vocabulary, which is very important for teachers to have awareness of. The two criteria: 'Usefulness' and 'Learnability' in teaching vocabulary were discussed in detail. Apart from this, the trainers emphasized on active vocabulary of the target language, which every learner needs to have to be a fluent speaker and an effective writer. The workshop was concluded by recommending some useful strategies of teaching and learning vocabulary, and the presenters urged all practicing teachers of vocabulary to promote long-term retention of vocabulary in ESL/EFL students.   The workshop proved to be very informative.   The Women's Scientific Research Committee organized a seminar on Monday, March 2, 2020, on Scientific Research Requirements for Program Accreditation. The seminar was presented by Dr. Eman Alzaanin, Supervisor of the Academic Development and Quality Unit, who highlighted the significant role of scientific research in the program accreditation.   Dr. Alzaanin started her presentation by defining program accreditation. "Program accreditation is an evaluation process whereby a program of study provides information on its activity and achievements to an external body (i.e., NCAAA in Saudi Arabia) that independently evaluates this information in order to issue a public judgment based on set standards for the value and quality of the program," said Dr. Alzaanin. She then reviewed NCAAA standards for program accreditation and program mission and objectives, which should guide all its operations.   Dr. Alzaanin asserted that the focus is on both faculty members' and students' research competencies. She further illustrated that program administration should be responsible for preparing and monitoring the scientific research plan, monitoring its commitment to implement its role in the research plan of the institution through specific performance indicators, and activating the values of scientific integrity, intellectual property rights, rules of ethical practices, and proper conduct in all academic, research, administrative, and service fields and activities.   She concluded that teaching staff should regularly participate in academic activities (e.g., participation in conferences and group discussions, research projects, arbitration of theses, and research). They should also participate effectively in research activities and scientific production, and their participation in these activities is considered as one of the criteria for their evaluation and promotion.   On March 2, 2020, the Women's Scientific Research Committee of the Bachelor of Arts in English program organized the third session of the Academic Writing series of Workshops by Dr. Nada Alqarni, supervisor of the Department of English language.   This workshop was devoted to exploring how researchers should write the methodology section in their research papers. The purpose of the methods section, said Dr. Alqarni, is to accurately and clearly describe the research design and the procedures undertaken to collect and analyze data, and to present the rationale for choosing each for the study. In addition, the methods section should explain in detail how a study was conducted so other researchers may be able to assess the merit of the research and even replicate the study themselves. This section should also highlight the unique features of a given study and show the reader that the research has been carried out appropriately and, therefore, the results can be believed.   Dr. Alqarni indicated that the methodology section has certain features. It explicitly describes the exact procedures and rationale, when developing data-set, results, and conclusions in an empirical research study. It does not include much background knowledge; however, it should contain justifications, explanations, and examples.   "There are four key elements included in the methodology," said Dr. Alqarni. These are: research design, population sample and selection of participants, data collection procedures, and statistical treatment/planned data analysis or analytic procedures. She also referred to the basic methodological concepts, namely; the variables, reliability, validity, and bias and error. She also reviewed the study design, including a description of the study setting and population of interest, as well as a description of the study’s sample or units of evaluation.   Dr. Alqarni explained the data collection methods, including qualitative research, interviews, and observational studies. She then reviewed some examples clarifying the methods of data collection and the language tense and grammatical structures commonly used.   The workshop was attended by students and teaching staff. The workshop ended with questions raised by the participants, which fostered a lively discussion on the topic.   On March 3, 2020, Hassan Costello delivered a workshop titled 'Résumé and Cover Letter Basics'. The workshop, under the supervision of Vice Dean for Academic Development & Quality, Dr. Abdulrahman Almosa, was developed to help Bachelor of Arts in English program upperclassmen and alumni effectively communicate their qualifications to prospective employers. Many of our upperclassmen or alumni often say that building a résumé or cover letter mystifies them. To address this, Mr. Costello explained that the first step is not to treat the résumé or cover letter as a formality. Rather, he related, job seekers should understand how an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) tailored résumé and cover letter can help them land their first interview. Guidance and Counselling Unit Supervisor, Dr. Dawood Mahdi, Alumni Unit Coordinator, Mohsin Khan, and 25 students attended the workshop.   As ATS software is the standard recruitment tool for HR departments, Mr. Costello framed the workshop on how students can build their 'no experience' résumé or cover letter to get past the wall of bots and onto the desk of a recruiter.   In his presentation, Mr. Costello introduced participants to their challenge as an English major – transferable skills. "Think about how what you've learned as an English major is transferable to work situations. All companies need employees with skills in writing, editing, critical analysis, and managing information," he said. He then explained how literature, and specifically our ENG 431 Novel Course, offer stimulating examples of complex material that will develop critical thinking skills of evaluation, description, and comparison.   Mr. Costello then distributed curated handouts that provided an introduction to and the best practices of the following:   Conveying skills and abilities to a potential employer with no professional experience; Writing a functional format ATS-friendly resume; Writing an ATS-friendly cover letter; Using targeted keywords.   While acknowledging that writing an ATS-friendly resume and cover letter with little to no experience is a challenge, participants were encouraged that the skills most employers report they are after can be obtained from the Bachelor of Arts in English Program at the Faculty of Languages and Translation. "Using targeted keywords matching the job description will get you to an interview. In the interview, show that you have the ability to see things through other contexts. Show them that you are flexible and adaptable, "Mr. Costello said.   At the end of the workshop, Mr. Khan announced, along with Dr. Mahdi, that eligible students will be able to put themselves up for nomination to the new LinkedIn Learning program. They both explained that 50 Students will be selected, noting that enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis. With over 13,000 courses to enroll in, LinkedIn Learning represents an exciting new development to hone the top three 'soft skills' wanted by employers: creativity, persuasion, and collaboration.   The Women's Advising and Counseling Unit of the Bachelor of Arts in English program conducted a smoking and drug awareness campaign that lasted for three days(6-8/7/1441). The campaign included lectures and workshops as well as an exhibition.   The success of the campaign was achieved through cooperation with the associations and hospitals as follows:    The Tobacco Control Program in Asir; The Saudi German Hospital; The Poison Control and Medical Chemistry Center in Asir;  Alkawther Health Association in Asir;  Peace Association for Rescue and Help in Asir;  Cosmoline Clinics in Abha.   The Women's Scientific Research Committee of the Bachelor of Arts in English program organized the second session of Academic Writing series of Workshops by Dr. Nada Alqarni on February 24, 2020.   Dr. Alqarni started her speech by referring to a common mistake that the authors should steer clear of, which is to sprinkle references liberally around with insufficient thought as to how they fit into the theory and the theme. She explained that a good start would be to place the topic into a historical perspective and identify key landmark studies. Additionally, the authors could establish a context for their own interest and research, and distinguish what has been done in order to identify a space for their own work.   Dr. Alqarni asserted that the review of literature should indicate the core concepts, the variables and the findings of the research paper.   She then reviewed the steps researchers should follow in writing the review of the literature. First, they should find the information and studies that are relevant to their topic. Second, they should summarize these studies (organize and evaluate them), indicating who found out what, when, and how this developed the study of the topic. Finally, the researchers should finish with a conclusion, explaining the gaps in knowledge that they have identified and how their research will fill these gaps left by previous research.   Dr. Alqarni highlighted the significance of the works cited in a research paper. Researchers, she said, should apply a mental test every time a work is referred to or a quotation is included. This mental test consists of asking the questions if this reference is adding to the development of the theory. How does it follow the thread of the research paper? And how does it relate to the research questions? Then the research should indicate the gap in the knowledge to be filled.   Dr. Alqarni discusses the rules of citation tense. She illustrated that a move from past to present perfect and then to present indicates that the researchers reported are increasingly close to the writer in some way. She then reviewed the methods of giving general panorama of past-to-present literature, reporting what specific authors have said, and highlighting limitations of previous studies.   Dr. Alqarni provided many valuable examples that clarified all the steps for writing the literature review effectively. The Unit of Advising and Counseling of the Bachelor of Arts in English program cooperated with Cosmoline Clinics in Abha and conducted a workshop on 25 February 2020 titled "Students' Anxiety and its Treatments". Students had a great time trying out different anxiety management strategies and learning about the causes and symptoms of anxiety disorder.   On February 26, 2020, Alumni Unit Coordinator, Mohsin Khan, delivered a workshop titled 'LinkedIn Learning'. The workshop, under the supervision of Vice Dean for Academic Development & Quality, Dr. Abdulrahman Almosa, was developed to address the main problem – lack of knowledge. Not enough students know about the availability of LinkedIn Learning, and it could be advertised to the student population more. To combat this, Mr. Khan explained that the first step is increasing awareness of how to create a LinkedIn account and how to use LinkedIn learning. Members of the FLT staff and a group of students attended the workshop.   As LinkedIn Learning now offers 13,000 online courses, Mr. Khan framed the workshop on courses of interest to our students and faculty. He started off by explaining that LinkedIn Learning is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) provider similar to KKUx or Coursera and that there is an option to create and save lists of courses. After showing workshop participants how to register, navigate, and access from any desktop or mobile device, Mr. Khan provided the key pointers of LinkedIn Learning as follows:   Unlimited access to video tutorials; Personalized recommendations on the most in-demand skills based on preferences; Helpful resources like quizzes and exercises.   Vice Dean Almosa said that both faculty and staff should take advantage of all resources available to them, explaining that the Alumni Unit at the Faculty of Languages and Translation aims to drive adoption of LinkedIn Learning as a tool for professional development, which is free of charge to Bachelor of Arts in English program students.   Mr. Khan closed out the workshop by explaining the "badging" feature. "LinkedIn Learning is connected to your LinkedIn account. I encourage you to open an account today and register for a course. Badges will be added to your profile when you complete a course. نظمت وحدة الخريجات بكلية اللغات والترجمة ورشة عمل بعنوان LinkedIn Learning يوم الخميس الموافق 26/6/1441. قدمتها  منسقة اللينكد ان بكلية اللغات و الترجمة د. أمل متولي بحضور و مشاركة منسقة اللينكد ان بالجامعة أ. فاطمة عسيري. وقد بدأت الدكتورة امل متولي باستعراض معلومات عن لينكندان ومبادرة الدورات التدريبية المتاحة على الموقع وتناولت بعض المزايا التي يقدمها الموقع للمستخدمين ومنها احتواء الموقع على دورات تدريبية ذات مستويات مختلفة  تتعدى ٩٠٠٠ دورة تدريبية  وتشمل مهارات متعددة منها اللغة والمهارات الشخصية وإدارة الأعمال والتكنولوجيا  كما قامت  باستعراض بعض الأسئلة الأكثر شيوعا عن الموقع وقدمت إجابات عنها وفي الجزء الثاني من ورشة العمل قامت الأستاذة فاطمة العسيري  منسقة البرنامج على مستوى جامعة الملك خالد باستعراض المبادرة التي تقدمها الجامعة للطلاب والطالبات وأعضاء وعضوات هيئة التدريس حيث توفر الجامعة هذه الدورات التدريبية المتاحة على موقع لينكد ان عن بعد خلال عام ٢٠٢٠ وكيفية  تسجيل الطالبات والعضوات وتفعيل الحسابات للاستفادة من المحتوى الذي تقدمه هذه الدورات التدريبية.  كما استعرضت كيفية أنشاء حساب بالبريد الإلكتروني الجامعي وحفظ الدورات التدريبية على صفحة الموقع للرجوع اليها والاستفادة منها.  وقد تفاعلت المشاركات خلال ورشة العمل واستقبلت منسقة كلية اللغات والترجمة المزيد من الرغبات في المشاركة في المبادرة بمجرد انتهاء ورشة العمل مما يعكس اهتمام الطالبات بتطوير مهاراتهم والاستعداد لسوق العمل.
أقام نادي اللغة الانجليزية بكلية اللغات والترجمة دورة بعنوان "كيف تطور لغتك الانجليزية" يوم السبت ٢٨/٦/١٤٤١ في الوقت ٤:٠٠ - ٦:٠٠م في المدرجات المركزية بجامعة الملك خالد.   وفي التفاصيل ، فقد أقام نادي اللغة الانجليزية بكلية اللغات والترجمة دورة أتيحت لجميع طلاب جامعة الملك خالد بعنوان "كيف تطور لغتك الانجليزية" قدمها رائد النشاط الطلابي بالكلية الأستاذ/ خالد بن سلمان القاسمي يوم السبت الموافق ٢٨/٦/١٤٤١  في المدرج رقم ه في المدرجات المركزية ، وذلك بالشراكة مع وحدة التوجيه والإرشاد ووحدة التطوير والجودة بالكلية ومع نادي مهارة المركزي. وقد حضر الدورة أكثر من ٥٠ طالب من مختلف الكليات بجامعة الملك خالد ، وقد تم بث الدورة على حساب النادي بتويتر.
  On Wednesday, February 19, 2020, the Women's Scientific Research Committee of the Bachelor of Arts in English program organized a practical workshop on Rbrul by Dr. Khairia Ali Abu Dady, assistant professor of sociolinguistics.   Dr. Abu Dady started her presentation by reviewing the various uses of Rbrul in conducting different scientific studies. She specifically focused on the significance of the software in sociolinguistics and reviewed some valuable examples.   She then started the practical section of the workshop. First, she guided the participants to the installation steps of the software. Then she worked with them on data files. The workshop was very informative and introduced the participants to the use of Rbrul in conducting scientific research. It was attended by staff members and members of the scientific research committee.   Of noteworthy mention, Dr. Abu Dady conducted a Rbrul workshop during the first semester which was organized by the Language Research Center, where she provided an introduction to the software.   On February 19, 2020, there was a presentation titled 'Simultaneous Interpreting' by two Master of Arts in Translation program students named Wafa Al-Qahtani and Raneem Riadh at a seminar organized by the Language Research Center.   Wafa and Raneem first defined 'Interpreting', followed by a detailed explanation of three modes of interpretation. "Interpreting is the transfer of one spoken or signed language into another", said the presenters. They went on further to say that it was IMMEDIACY rather than ORALITY that set 'interpreting' apart from 'translation' because orality usually EXCLUDES 'signed language'.   Simultaneous Interpretation (SI), they said, is the one in which the interpreter listens and renders the entire message in the target language at the same time the speaker is talking. They also talked about some more interesting sub-types of interpretation, such as chuchotage, bidule, bimodal interpreting, and so on. They shed light on the fact that the goal for simultaneous interpreting is NOT to paraphrase but to convey the exact message uttered in the source language.   Wafa and Raneem then talked about how SI originated, and how it is the mode officially adopted at large global organizations like the UN, EU, etc. They stated the working environment for simultaneous interpreters. In a sound-proof booth with direct view onto the conference room, the interpreter listens to a speaker through earphones and simultaneously transmits the message in another language through a microphone to the listeners' room, they added.   Wafa and Raneem, while explaining its salient features, talked about how it saves time and ensures continuity with less distraction and more concentration. They brought to light the skills a simultaneous interpreter must possess, i.e., amazing language skills, specialized knowledge, and cultural competence.   Décalage, EVS (lag time) and Word Order, the main focus of attention of the seminar, were dealt with separately, saying defining the former as the period of time between the source text input and the interpreter's target text. One important issue is that the interpreter has to make a decision on the size of units or chunks he deems suitable to form a meaningful unit to start with, when to start, when to chunk, when to wait or stall and when to start again. In relation to word order as a critical issue in simultaneous interpreting, they said, "Awkward word order is ubiquitous. The Europeans' focus of interest has been on the difficulty of putting German, Russian, Chinese or Japanese into English or French. In these source languages, a verb or predicate which are traditionally seen as the heart of the sentence's meaning and usually come early in English, may be delayed until the end". They brought this issue to Arabic. Arabic deploying VSO order is considered very hard to be interpreted alongside English. Translating an English noun phrase with one noun preceded by 5 or more adjectives into Arabic must start with the noun first and then it lists the adjectives. This poses a challenge and the interpreter's memory is the yardstick on which SI success depends. The example is elucidated by a native, shady, ornamental, high, massive, mature, mighty tree.   The seminar was informative, interactive, and an overall success. The faculty members and the MA students at the Graigor campus also participated in the seminar. Concluding the seminar, Language Research Center Director, Dr. Ismail Alrefaai, thanked the participants and encouraged all other MA students to participate and follow suit.   On February 17, 2020, the Women's Scientific Research Committee of the Bachelor of Arts in English program organized the first session of the Academic Writing series of Workshops by Department of English Supervisor, Dr. Nada Alqarni.   "Effective academic writing depends on interactional elements which supplement propositional information in the text and alert readers to the writer's opinion," said Dr. Alqarni.   She explained the importance of employing hedging, whose job is to make things fuzzier, implying that the writer is less than fully committed to the certainty of the referential information given. She further illustrated that hedging can be expressed through the use of a variety of structures. Additionally, she explained when to use hedges, emphasizing that their appropriate use is central to developing an academic, communicative competence as it assists the writers in establishing "a relationship with the reader and with the authorities in the field."   Following this introductory section, Dr. Alqarni moved to explain the parts of the academic research paper. The introduction, the purpose of introduction and common mistakes that the authors should steer clear of in writing the introduction as well as the main parts in the introduction were the main ideas covered in the second section. She emphasized that in the introduction authors should establish why the topic is important, outline the past-present history of the study of the topic, indicate the gap in knowledge and possible limitations, state the aim of the paper and its contribution, explain the key terminology in the field of the study and how the terminology and acronyms are used in the paper, and indicate the structure of paper - what is and is not included.   The workshop included practice on the three main parts of an introduction (i.e., the general research area, the gap in the literature and the purpose of the research paper). The workshop was a big success, and it was attended by many graduate students, staff members and scientific research committee members.   Of noteworthy mention, the series of academic writing workshops consists of seven sessions on Mondays 17 Feb to 30 March 2020 at 9:00 am at the Faculty of Languages and Translation, King Abdullah Road Campus.   On February 17, 2020, two Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics program students, Alaa Alshehri and Fatimah Abdulaziz delivered a presentation entitled 'Online Research Tools: Discussion and Tips' at a seminar organized by the Scientific Research Committee - Women’s section. The seminar was attended by current MA students and research committee members.   The presentation discussed several useful websites that help researchers to review citations, check grammar mistakes, and check plagiarism. The presenters shared their experience by raising the importance of the English Club in improving students' speaking skills. Alaa and Fatimah suggested that MA students should have their own reading library, which contains articles in their field of research. The presenters appreciated the effort of their professors in effectively helping them and other students during their MA studies and encouraged students to seek their professors' help and discuss any issues that they face during the course of their research.   At the end of the presentation, Alaa and Fatimah advised students to be patient and ambitious toward their goal. They talked about the time when they were stressed during their MA journey, noting that intrinsic motivation is key to student achievement. أقام نادي اللغة الإنجليزية بكلية اللغات والترجمة عملا تطوعيا استمر لمدة ثلاثة أيام تشارك فيه مع النادي التطوعي بجامعة الملك خالد ومع وزارة البيئة والمياه والزراعة.  وفي التفاصيل، فقد قام نادي اللغة الإنجليزية بكلية اللغات والترجمة ضمن أنشطته الطلابية بعمل تطوعي بدأ يوم الخميس الموافق 19/6/1441هـ واستمر لمدة ثلاثة أيام بمعدل ثلاث ساعات يوميا، وذلك بتعليق 50 بيت للطيور على الأشجار وبغرس 50 شتلة من نبات السدر في منتزه دلغان وهو أحد منتزهات منطقة عسير.  وقد تم هذا العمل التطوعي بالشراكة مع النادي التطوعي بجامعة الملك خالد بريادة الأستاذ/ ياسر السالمي وبالتعاون مع وزارة البيئة والمياه والزراعة وبحضور سعادة مدير إدارة منتزهات منطقة عسير المهندس/ مريح الشهراني.  وقد جاء هذا العمل تحقيقا لشعار فريق العمل التطوعي بنادي اللغة الإنجليزية أثر يبقى.
  Under the patronage of Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi, Dean, and the supervision of Dr. Abdulrahman Almosa, Vice Dean for Academic Development & Quality, the E-Learning Unit of the Bachelor of Arts in English program organized the 15th E-Learning Awareness Campaign for new students of English Department from Sunday, February 9, 2020, to Thursday, February 13, 2020.   Vice Dean Almosa appreciated the efforts of the E-Learning Unit for organizing the campaign and encouraged students to actively participate in such activities.   Mohsin Raza Khan, FLT E-Learning Unit Supervisor, said that the aim of the awareness campaign was to make new students aware of the necessity and effective use of the King Khalid University E-Learning learning management system (Blackboard).   During the campaign, the E-Learning Unit contacted students in their respective classrooms and imparted Blackboard training. Students were exposed to important Blackboard tools - Announcement, Lectures, Assignment & Tests, Discussion, Blog, Wikis, Course Message, Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, Blackboard Collaborate, and were given extensive training on using these tools.   Students enthusiastically participated in the campaign.   Ms. Sharmin Siddiqui and Ms. Sufia Sultana delivered a presentation titled Creating Future Leaders by Teachers as Core Professionals at a seminar organized by the Language Research Center on February 12, 2020. Their presentation emphasized the importance of building leadership among teachers and transferring leadership attributes to students of the Bachelor of Arts in English program.   The session began with a lead-in task in which the participants were asked to write names of their high school teachers. Ms. Siddiqui and Ms. Sultana focused on the fact that the teachers who had created a positive impression among their students were in general well remembered.   They pointed up leadership among teachers by quoting Richard Dufour who termed teaching profession as the creator of all other professions. They also quoted Wendell Willkie, J.F. Kennedy, Henry Adams and Alexander the Great while talking about the correlation between leadership and learning.   The main points Ms. Siddiqui and Ms. Sultana’s presentation covered were leadership qualities a teacher should possess, leadership styles, the demonstration of leadership in class, teaching leadership skills, and barriers to developing teacher leadership. They highlighted the combination of leadership qualities great teachers possess, and how they can train up the learners to achieve those leadership attributes that they can apply in their lives and profession.   The presentation was informative, interactive and a great success.
