  This morning on 9/17/2019 there was a department-wide meeting in room A/3/60. The purposes of the meeting were to have an open gathering, hold an interactive Q&A session, and to recognize those high achieving students who have been in the program.   Dean Abdullah Al-Melhi began the proceedings by relating a story of his own daughter's educational achievement. He recounted how his daughter felt overwhelmed with the workload in her graduate studies. He told her to persevere and that the rewards for all of the hard work and sleepless nights would pay off in the end. Heeding this advice, she graduated with a very high GPA. She then acknowledged that the 'fruits of her labor' far exceeded the challenges she overcame. He used this real-life story to implore the students to also persevere in the face of the inevitable challenges and difficulties of their rigorous academic road ahead.   Following Dean Al-Melhi there was a series of informational speeches by some of the faculty members. Academic Guidance Counselor, Dr. Dawood Mahdi, summarized some of the pertinent student procedural rules and regulations and reiterated that help was available from the administration. Chairman, Dr. Munassir Alhamami, then addressed graduating students about the various educational and career opportunities available to them. LEP Director, Dr. Charles Forman, then briefed the students on the resources available at the Language Enhancement Program (LEP). "The LEP has three objectives. First to help the students with their classes. Second to bridge the gap between theory and practice in English language usage. Third to help senior-level students and recent graduates pursue educational and or career opportunities."   Following the informational session, English Club member and student Abdulrahim Al-Qahtani directed the awards ceremony. Khalid Mohammed and Omar Asiri were recognized for achieving perfect attendance the previous semester and given certificates for this achievement.   Then all of the students who have maintained a GPA of 4.5 or more were matriculated into the elite membership of the Dean's List. Those included on the Dean's List represent the highest level of academic achievement on an on-going basis. The audience enthusiastically recognized the following members who received certificates commemorating the event. He reiterated that the faculty members are devoted to helping the students in their academic careers. Finally, the department came together for a group photograph.   Special thanks to all of those who made the auspicious event possible.   On September 15, 2019, Academic Development and Quality Deanship Vice Dean, Dr. Saeed Saad Hadi, was pleased to host NCAAA Consultant, Dr. Loay Abusalah. Dean Abdullah Melhi and the faculty's Vice Dean of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Abdulrahman Almosa, represented the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) leadership team at the meeting. The purpose was to discuss the FLT's accreditation progress.   Over the summer, the FLT submitted the required Self-Evaluation Scales report. Dr. Abusalah expressed his great satisfaction with the department's work. He related that the next step is to submit the Self-Study Report, which demonstrates and provides the documentary support for each of the conclusions made in accordance with the criteria established under NCAAA standards. Those criteria include:   Mission and goals; Program management and quality assurance; Teaching and learning; Students; Faculty members; Learning resources, facilities, and equipment.   The Self-Study Report is based on a 3 prong general framework. First, specific policies are identified. Next, is a short synopsis explaining the implementation procedures followed in executing those policies. Finally, there is an assessment loop in which there is a thorough and frank review of the aforementioned policies and efforts and a detailed evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of each item.   Dr. Abusalah expressed his confidence that the FLT would successfully complete this next milestone in the accreditation process. "I am very happy with your work. The FLT has demonstrated its capabilities and commitment. The faculty's enthusiasm is apparent in this room. Rest assured, that I wish to see the FLT accredited, and I will do everything necessary to assist the faculty throughout the process," he said.   At the closing of the meeting, Dean Al-Melhi expressed his appreciation to all the participating faculty members. He stressed the importance of obtaining accreditation as quickly as practicable. "I know I can count on all of you to work together and successfully complete the remaining steps. Having the department attain accreditation is one of the department's primary objectives for which I take personal responsibility."   The Faculty of Languages and Translation is dedicated to providing excellence in all aspects of its educational offerings. The FLT, its students, and alumni deserve national recognition for the quality of the program.   Turnout was strong for the annual Faculty of Languages and Translation's freshman orientation at the beginning of the semester, as students received an overview of the rules and regulations, enjoyed meeting fellow lowerclassmen, and learned more about the English Club.   Although orientation usually runs for 1-2 hours, it offers the opportunity to meet teachers and fellow students and forge relationships. Understanding the expectations of a King Khalid University student is key to making a successful transition into the Faculty of Languages and Translation. Student Advisor, Dr. Dawood Mahdi, and Student Activities Director, Faisal Alfadhil, both delivered speeches focused on becoming acquainted with the resources available. Upperclassmen were on hand to help students and offer words of support.   "Freshman Orientation is a great time for our new students to get ready for the transition to college life," Dean Abdullah Al-Melhi said.   Under the patronage of Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi, Dean, and the supervision of Dr. Abdulrahman Almosa, Vice Dean for Academic Development & Quality, the E-Learning Unit of the faculty organized an "E-Learning Awareness Campaign" for new students of English Department from Sunday, September 8, 2019 to Thursday, September 12, 2019.   Dr. Abdulrahman Almosa, Vice Dean for Academic Development & Quality, appreciated the efforts of the E-Learning Unit for organizing the campaign.   Dr. Munassir Alhamami, Chairman of English Department, accompanied the E-Learning Unit Team during the awareness campaign in some of the classes. He helped students in Arabic translation wherever it was required and maintained that these kinds of activities help students in attaining academic excellence.   Mohsin Raza Khan, FLT E-Learning Unit Supervisor, said that the aim of the awareness campaign was to make new students aware of the necessity and practical use of the King Khalid University E-Learning system- Blackboard. Furthermore, he stated, "The Campaign encouraged students to use Blackboard effectively. Students actively participated in the campaign.   The Faculty of Languages and Translation takes pleasure in announcing that the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), UK has named Dr Eyhab Abdulrazak Bader Eddin as a Qualified Member (Translator). ITI, which promotes the highest standards in the profession, is the only UK-based independent professional membership association for practising translators, interpreters and language service providers. It aims to enhance and continually develop the translating and interpreting profession between government, industry and commerce, the media and the general public. Founded in 1986, ITI has grown to 3,000 members and is considered a resource in the industry.   Having satisfied the qualifying requirements prescribed by ITI, Dr Bader Eddin is entitled to use the designatory letters 'MITI'. He may also produce office translations using ITI certification seals, which are recognized by embassies and diplomatic missions across the European Union. There are only 28 holders of the MITI designation across the world who are certified in the English-Arabic language combination, of whom only 6, including him, are in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The attainment of MITI is characterized by a rigorous process in which applicants are required to demonstrate their translation ability by translating a piece of text to a professional standard of accuracy. Dr Bader Eddin's produced translation, which was a 1200-word text, was deemed to be of professional quality and technically correct. Additionally, he is ISO 17100:2015 qualified. ISO 17100:2015 is the internationally recognised standard for translation services and was created to respond to the market need for a universally accepted benchmark. Meeting the ISO 17100:2015 standard sets a certain translator apart from other translators with the recognition that s/he is working to international standards. It is considered evidence that a certain translator is a professional and forward-thinking one. One of the benefits to translation service providers of one translator meeting the ISO 17100:2015 standard is to give confidence that potential translators work to a recognised standard and are committed to maintaining those standards in the industry. This also reduces the need to spend time checking qualifications and continuing professional development records of freelancers to ensure they meet the standard.   Of noteworthy mention, Dr Bader Eddin is also entitled to use the designatory letters 'MCIL' 'CL', which was conferred by the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL). CIOL is the UK-based professional membership body for language practitioners. It aims to enhance the recognition and promote the value of languages and language skills in the public interest. Founded in 1910, CIOL was granted its Royal Charter by HM Queen Elizabeth II on 19 July 2005 and formally began operating as 'The Chartered Institute of Linguists' on 1 September 2005.   Seven students from the Faculty of Languages and Translation recently participated in Swansea University's eight-week intensive summer English program in Wales, UK. The lucky participants excelled in a competitive process that included a selection committee and difficult exam.   Swansea University is one of the top universities in the UK, and the winner of the 2019 University of the Year What Uni Student Choice Awards.   This language program was the brainchild of King Khalid University Rector, Prof. Falleh Al-Solamy. His Excellency Rector Al-Solamy is a graduate from Swansea with a Ph.D. in mathematics. He was instrumental in setting up a student exchange cooperation agreement with his alma mater.   Dean, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, was pleased to offer this unique opportunity for an immersive language learning program to high performing students. "I am very proud of the young men who served as ambassadors for King Khalid University and the Kingdom at Swansea. I am certain that their hosts in the United Kingdom learned as much from them as our students learned in the program. We hope and expect these students to take a leadership role in their chosen fields."   Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Yahya Asiri, is credited with making this agreement and summer English program a reality in 2019. He is very pleased that the students had an exceptional learning experience and that all parties benefitted from the cultural exchange of our students visiting their counterparts in the UK.   Dr. Munassir Alhamami was also pleased that the program was so well received and that all efforts were highly successful. "These students deserve the highest praise. I was the on-site supervisor throughout the program. The intensive language program was difficult, and we still expected the participants to represent the Faculty of Languages and Translation and King Khalid University to the best of their ability, which they did. Their performance was exemplary, and we are so proud of each and every one."   The partnership team at Swansea is also quite satisfied with this initial effort. They were very impressed with our students and look forward to more exchanges in the future. The representatives from Swansea were knowledgeable and gracious hosts. King Khalid University hopes to hosts students from Swansea as soon as practicable.   The students who were selected for the language program at Swansea include: Abdullah Al-Shahrani; Abdulaziz Al-Asmari; Abdullah Yahya; Ahmed Asiri; Ali Al-Humhum; Hazaa Al-Zahrani; Nawaf Al-Qahtani.   News of this program was featured in a variety of publications both here and in the UK.   The Deanship of Community Service and Continuing Education has recently collaborated with the Faculty of Languages and Translation to deliver the 2nd annual 4-week intensive English language course designed for Ministry of Education (MOE) teachers.   With this program, FLT and Al Khaleej Training and Education teachers provided English language instruction to nearly 90 public school teachers at the primary, secondary, and high school levels. The purpose of the program was to deliver an English language refresher course to public school teachers. The curriculum was geared to both beginners and those expecting to take the IELTS exam in the near future.   This program was sponsored by the Vice Presidency of Academic Affairs, Faculty of Languages and Translation Dean, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, and Dean of Community Service and Continuing Education, Dr. Omar Alwan Aqeel. ELC Director, Fahad Al-Shehri, supervised operations under the tutelage of Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Yahya Asiri.   After passing an entrance exam, governed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), nearly 90 students joined one of four different groups reflecting their English language proficiency.   Vice Rector of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Merzin Al-Shahrani, attended the opening ceremony. He congratulated the participants and thanked the faculty and staff who made the program possible. "I congratulate all of you attending this program. You have wonderful instructors that I am sure you will learn a lot from. This 2nd annual program will be even better than the first, and we hope to expand and improve the effort each succeeding year," he said.   Representing the Faculty of Languages and Translation were Hassan Costello and Dr. Michael Hadzantonis. Representing Al Khaleej Training and Education were Bryan Bell and Rocio Munoz.   The Deanship of Community Service and Continuing Education recognizes the importance of this program and is committed to its continued success.   A university-wide webinar on the topic of 'Blackboard Collaborate Ultra' was held by FLT E-Learning Supervisor, Mohsin Raza Khan, on Thursday, August 22, 2019, under the supervision of Training Manager at the Deanship of E-Learning, Mohammed Jarallah. In attendance were faculty members from various colleges and locales. Mr. Khan provided some basic instruction for those who were not familiar with King Khalid University's learning management system, Blackboard. Mr. Khan then conducted a training session in which he focused on Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. "Blackboard Collaborate Ultra is a real-time video conferencing tool that allows users to add files, share applications, and use a virtual whiteboard to interact with participants. King Khalid University selected this user-friendly tool that runs in a browser and does not require Java to be installed to help support our students with a world-class communication solution."   Of note, the webinar highlighted differences between Blackboard Collaborate and Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. The webinar focused on the important features needed to foster collaborative online learning as follows:   Session Menu; Collaborate Panel; Audio/Video Controls; Creating an Online Session; Utilizing the File Sharing, Screen Sharing, and Whiteboard Sharing Tools.   The main goal of the webinar was designed to give participants a quick tour of all the essential features and controls in the user interface. In doing so, participants will effectively be able to improve student learning, engagement, and interaction.   The Deanship of E-Learning in cooperation with the Faculty of Languages and Translation is expanding its educational resources to serve more members of the community and is committed to continuous improvement in all academic programs. E-learning is a vital component of both objectives and an essential educational development tool at the university and other educational institutions throughout the Kingdom.

  The Faculty of Languages and Translation's (FLT) E-Learning Unit had a very busy semester. Under the supervision of Dean, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, and direction of E-Learning Supervisor, Mohsin Khan, the unit rolled out and implemented the Cambridge Learning Management System (CLMS), which has been a great benefit to our students. See article: "New Textbooks Are Key to 'Unlocking' the Potential of Our Students".   This system is highly flexible. It allows and encourages the learners to interact with one another, their teachers, and a host of online content outside of the classroom. CLMS was an enormous undertaking, and naturally, there were some growing pains. However, the system is highly capable and useful. Approximately 9,000 ELC students and 160 teachers at all university campuses were given access to the Cambridge Learning Management System (CLMS).   Given the size and scope of CLMS, quality assurance of course content is a high priority. The publishers take great pains to assure that the content is useful and appropriate for our students and have systems of quality management that drive continuous improvement. King Khalid University also has a quality assurance framework in place to ensure optimal learning outcomes and continuous improvement. The university utilizes the Quality Matters (QM) methodology for many academic and support functions.   QM is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of online educational programs. The program started with a small consortium of colleges and universities in the United States, and has grown to more than a thousand institutional subscribers worldwide. To date, QM has certified more than five thousand online courses and has provided professional development resources for nearly 50,000 teachers.   King Khalid University was the first QM subscriber in the Kingdom and has several certified courses in various curricula. KKU has won many accolades and awards for its QM efforts and course content. Our university’s QM Program serves as a model for other educational institutions throughout the MENA region. The university encourages the development of additional e-learning courses to serve our students and the community better. A QM certified course rubric must satisfy 43 international standards based on the following 8 design criteria:   Course Overview and Introduction Learning Objectives (Competencies) Assessment and Measurement Instructional Materials Learning Activities and Learner Interactions Course Technology Learner Support Accessibility and Usability   "I hope that all FLT faculty members will get involved with e-Learning to benefit our students. These programs are designed to enhance learning outcomes for the students and further developing faculty skills.   On May 2, 2019, Quality Consultant at the Deanship of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Ahmad Farid, led a workshop at the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) on NCAAA accreditation of the English language program. The first step in this process is for the department to complete a comprehensive initial self-evaluation. This analysis evaluates the current performance levels of all essential academic functions in the program. The FLT is pleased to report that the initial self-evaluation is complete.   The comprehensive self-evaluation is a complex and labor-intensive effort. The FLT assembled 11 faculty teams, each of which was assigned to evaluate a mission-critical department function. A total of nearly 30 faculty members from the FLT participated. The process involves analyzing tasks and the associated sub-tasks, then measuring current performance against a variety of quantitative and qualitative standards. The teams were working on a tight schedule for this phase of the accreditation project. Also, the work had to be completed in accordance with a strict set of evaluative parameters. Every team met the challenge head-on, and delivered high-quality work on schedule.   Vice Dean of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Abdulrahman Almosa, is pleased with the FLT's progress. He stated "Before the NCAAA will begin its own critical analysis of the program, certain requirements must be satisfied. The program under consideration must demonstrate that appropriate quality assurance standards are in place, and that all operations are in accordance with its institutional charter or license. The self-evaluation requires that the department support each conclusion with a coherent statistical analysis based on traceable raw data. This effort required that the teams collect, analyze, and evaluate in a short time frame. Each team had to collate quantitative data from a wide variety of sources, and collect qualitative data from the different stakeholders, including students, faculty, and members of the community." Dr. Almosa then commended the accreditation teams for their hard work and exemplary results.   Program Coordinator at the Faculty of Languages and Translation, Dr. Fadi Al-Khasawneh, expanded upon Vice Dean Almosa's introductory remarks. "The accreditation process begins with a rigorous self-evaluation of the program. The NCAAA will not start its independent review until it is satisfied that we have completed a fair, balanced, and objective internal evaluation of our program," he said. This requires that the department conduct a detailed performance analysis of operations in 11 separate areas. Dr. Al-Khasawneh also noted that each internal evaluation is subject to independent review by a duly authorized NCAAA review panel.   The accreditation process entails for additional major steps to be completed in due course: Acceptance of the application by the NCAAA, and scheduling of dates for review; Completion of a Self-Study Report for Programs (SSRP) using the criteria and processes specified by the NCAAA. This normally takes between 9-12 months. NCAAA will provide ongoing advice during this period to ensure full compliance with all requirements; Independent evaluation by the NCAAA or it delegates, including a site visit by a review panel; Decision on accreditation by the NCAAA after consideration of external review panel recommendations.   This first phase of accreditation was not easy. The teams had to complete a large amount of work in a short amount of time. Moreover, the period of performance of this phase overlapped with the end of the school year.   Aspiring surgeon and first-year medical program student Ahmed Alamoud recently received the Outstanding Student Award from the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) - English Language Center (ELC) at King Khalid University. All incoming medical students take a one-semester intensive English language program run by the FLT-ELC because the core medical school classes are taught in English. This intensive English language program, called ENG 019, can be challenging even for those who students who seem to have acquired a fair foundation in the English language. The students who find the 019 courses easy are generally students who were exposed to intensive English courses or studied a high-level English course prior to their first semester in college and/or have lived abroad in native English speaking countries for longer periods.   Ahmed Alamoud was one student who excelled in his 019 coursework. His grades and English skill levels are exemplary. Although Ahmed never studied English at this level nor has lived abroad, he has mastered the English language to a near-native competency. Throughout the semester, he has exemplified a remarkable commitment to learn/master his coursework by dedicating a lot of hours outside the classroom to self-study. This alone is quite a noteworthy accomplishment. Perhaps more importantly, Ahmed Alamoud is graciously helping his classmates benefit from his expertise.   According to ENG 019 Course Instructor, Rasheed Ali Mohamoud, Ahmed has been assisting his peers both inside and outside the classroom with their studies throughout the semester. He has selflessly assumed an unofficial teaching role in the various English skills like: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Moreover, Ahmed Alamoud sets a good example for others to follow. Through his actions and achievements, he shows his classmates that hard work and dedication can yield spectacular results. Instructor Rasheed further said, 'Ahmed Alamoud not only offers to help the other students learn and understand the day to day lessons but he serves as a role model for other students'.   Vice Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Translation, Dr. Yahya Asiri, and Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Translation, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, presented the Outstanding Student Award and commemorative plaque to Ahmed Alamoud. Dean Al-Melhi noted 'We are all highly impressed by Ahmed Alamoud's English competency. We are also grateful for his teaching contributions and tutoring efforts towards the 019 program here at KKU. Ahmed embodies the character of a competent professional and good citizen: He is also self-driven, disciplined, dedicated, and all around a generous individual. Certainly, he will continue to excel academically. Most importantly he will make a fine surgeon one day in the near future and a valuable asset to the community and his nation'.   The FLT has recently revamped the 019 intensive English program. The FLT has adopted a robust, modern, and effective set of courses proven to help the students achieve the results needed for them to stand out from the crowd at both the national and international levels. The new course was designed for the students to have access to a well-rounded learning experience. As a result, our students will have both the broader knowledge and an in-depth understanding of the aim of the intensive language English course. The new course is more integrated to successfully support the student to acquire a better understanding of the skills of the four core skills in English: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Of noteworthy mention, the FLT has created a better learning experience for the students outside of the classroom by commissioning the Language Enhancement Program (LEP) available to all students at the Mahala Campus school library. The LEP runs every day during normal hours from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. All of our students have been given an equal opportunity to improve their English language in all of the major skills being taught in the program.   The Faculty of Languages and Translation and the English Language Center are committed to providing world-class language instruction at the university.   Several weeks ago, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Crown Prince, Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Defense, met with a delegation of high-level government officials of the People's Republic of China on a diplomatic mission. The parties agreed to increasing the level of economic and social collaboration between the two nations.   In support of these cooperative efforts, His Royal Highness committed to teaching the Chinese language in primary schools, secondary schools, and universities in the Kingdom. The People's Republic of China agreed to help facilitate Chinese language learning through its own Ministry of Education.   The Confucius Institute is a Chinese Ministry of Education outreach initiative that is used to promote Chinese language learning and cultural exchange on an international basis. The Institute sends Chinese language teacher/representatives to schools and universities around the world. Many of the Chinese teachers sent abroad are college graduates who are trained as Chinese language instructors for non-native speakers. The cost of the program is shared by the Chinese government and the international host. Schools around the Kingdom will be hosting the Chinese teachers.   King Khalid University has already taken substantial steps to implement this new program. The Faculty of Languages & Translation is spearheading the effort on behalf of the university. Faculty of Languages & Translation Dean Abdullah Al-Melhi is leading the initiative for King Khalid University.   On April 26, 2019, a Chinese delegation flew to Riyadh to meet with several prominent Saudi universities including: King Saud University, King Abdulaziz University, Tabuk University, Princess Nourah Bint Abdul Rahman University, Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, and of course King Khalid University. Dean Al-Melhi met with the Chinese delegates, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) Deputy Director-General, Yu Yunfeng, and Beijing Language and Culture University Vice President, Zhang Baojun. The purpose of the meeting was to begin the planning process for programs at the respective universities.   Deputy Director-General Yunfeng said (by way of an interpreter) "I am pleased to be a part of this new venture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I am so glad that our two nations have joined in cooperation for our mutual benefit." Vice President Baojun said (also through an interpreter) "We are looking forward to a long and prosperous relationship between our two countries. All of us have so much we can teach and learn from one another."   After much discussion between and among the attendees, the Saudi representatives of the various institutions arranged for follow-up actions that will allow the initiatives to proceed quickly and in an orderly fashion. Great progress was made with the Chinese delegation on establishing preliminary logistics requirements and resource allocation at King Khalid University.   Dean Al-Melhi noted "This was more than your basic 'meet & greet'. The Chinese language initiative is an ambitious project with an aggressive schedule. Bringing this program to fruition will require a high level of cooperation and hard work among all stakeholders. We have already negotiated certain plans, and the project is moving forward. This is such a large undertaking, and it requires that an entirely new department be created under the Faculty of Languages & Translation.   The women's English Club of the Faculty of Languages and Translation and the Deanship of Student Affairs dedicated a day to re-enact 'Macbeth' by Shakespeare on Wednesday the 13th of March from 9:00 to 10:00 in the theater of the Science College. The play was a great success with more than 230 guests from all departments. The primary objective of the program was to combine drama, performance, and English literature to develop the practical experience and academic study of students. The secondary objective of this program was to foster a creative environment and to give an opportunity to exceptionally talented students to practice their skills such as acting, speech fluency, makeup art, design, and directing. The program started with an inspirational speech given by English Club Head,  Maram Almalki, who spoke about drama and its importance. Then, a short trailer about the play was shown. After, more than 10 acts divided into five main parts took center stage.   The well-directed play replete with sound effects, wireless microphones, lights, a smoke machine, and different backgrounds provided the necessary conditions for fabulous performances from over a dozen actresses. Of noteworthy mention, many spectators commented that the costumes used by the actresses were elegant and really contributed to a unique experience.   At the end of the play, a short video was shown that contained all of the cast and the directing team members as a grand gesture of appreciation.   Students at the Faculty of Languages and Translation attended a workshop organized by the Intellectual Awareness Unit on Tuesday, 12/7/1440 at Faculty of Islamic Legislation. The workshop which was held by Dr. Lamya Alqadi focused on Qur’anic values and their impact on intellectual security.   Dr. Alqadi started her speech with the prophetic tradition narrated by ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan that the Prophet said (ﷺ): “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it" [al-Bukhari and Muslim]. The Qur’an advocates many values that shape one’s intellectual and spiritual journey to Allah the Almighty, Dr. Alqadi illustrated. "We can’t limit Islamic values into a few core values. However, the most important values and practices were identified by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself. We need to adhere to the Qura'nic values and to follow the instructions in the Holy Qur'an as well as prophetic traditions in every step in our life", she affirmed.   The values of truthfulness, purity, faithfulness, honesty, good intention and many other values are illustrated in the Qur’an. Allah the Almighty says “Allah knows what your hearts contain.” (Qur’an, 3:119). This indicates that actions are judged by the intention behind them, which is a significant Islamic value. She further asserted that values play a vital role in our lives. A person cannot be a true believer unless he loves for his brother what he loves for himself. Part of a person's good observance of Islam is to leave aside what does not concern him as well as the value of security which says that one should not harm himself or others.   At the end of the workshop, Dr. Alqadi asked the question if there is a reason to worry about our values as a result of the ongoing globalization.   On March 23, 2019, the 5th Annual Forum titled Modern Strategies in Teaching English was held at the Saudi German Hospital. The event was organized by Al Khaleej Training and Education and the Faculty of Languages and Translation. The primary aim of the forum was to share ideas about the modern concepts of English language teaching. The event was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Mowafiq Al-Momani. The program consisted of two sessions and six presentations.   Michael Rattan gave a presentation titled 'How to Learn?' and Jordan Rimpela spoke on the subject of 'The Benefits of Teaching ELLs Affixes, Roots and Their Meanings'. Three other presentations were delivered by Bryan Bell, Mohammad Adil and Christopher Harris who talked respectively about 'The Psychology of Classroom Dynamics', 'Successful Classroom Management in EFL Teaching', and 'Living and Working in Saudi Arabia'.   A medical (PYP) student named Ahmed Abdullah Alamoud also shared his interesting English learning experience and emphasized its importance in real life.   The event ended with a certificate award ceremony that honored the presenters. This ceremony was graced with the presence of Dr. Musa Al-Ahmari, English Language Center Director. The forum undoubtedly was a great success.   The women's English Club of the Faculty of Languages and Translation and the Deanship of Student Affairs held a program titled 'Idea X'. Idea X is a program designed to provide a platform for motivational speeches with inspiring lessons. Assistant Dean, Dr. Suaad Al-Qahtani, did exactly that on Wednesday, February 20th from 9:00 to 12:00 in the theatre of the Science College. Assistant Dean Al-Qahtani explained that thoughts impact what we manifest in our daily lives. Those thoughts, she related, begin with words. After, a series of inspirational speeches were delivered by teachers and students to a sizeable audience of around 50.   At the end of the program, certificates were awarded to the top students in their classes as a gesture of encouragement.   The women's English Club of the Faculty of Languages and Translation and the Deanship of Student Affairs held a program titled 'International Women's Day' on Sunday the 10th of March from 9:00 to 11:00 in Building C. The program introduced a lot of successful ladies in Asir such as Salwa Al-Qahtani, Amjad Al-Hajri, and Sharifah Al-Qahtani. After the opening ceremony, the club introduced the first English Club's magazine. The magazine, complete with the students' talents like drawing, photography, English and Arabic literature, was brought to light under the supervision of Dr. Suaad Al-Qahtani and Head of the English Club, Maram Almalki. The program included the 10 years' challenge, which highlighted a balanced perspective.   In an effort to raise health awareness, Dr. Suaad kicked off a health challenge.   On 28 March 2019, the Scientific Research Committee organized a seminar on the 'Basics of Writing and Publishing Scientific Articles for the M.A. students of the Dept. of English'. The participant in this seminar was Amatul Alvi. The seminar started by introducing to the graduate students the importance of having experience in writing and publishing scientific articles.   A couple of important points such as: criteria of any good journal, reasons for the rejection of an article by a journal, tips on having good knowledge on any journals, elements of a good article, etc., were discussed by the presenter.
