Turning the Page

Last week the department celebrated the graduation of the Spring 2018 class. It is with our deep appreciation to the English Club for sponsoring this important event. We marked this auspicious occasion with a wide variety of speakers and activities. The host for the evening, graduating senior Ahmed Eid, was very gracious and made sure that the celebration proceeded very smoothly. Graduating senior Sohail Al-Madkli marked the blessing of this event with a stirring recitation of Sūrat Ibrāhīm. Next, our esteemed Dean, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, delivered a poignant graduation address in which he stressed the importance of educating future generations while imploring our graduates to continue that glorious tradition. The President of the English Club, Ali Saeed Daif Allah, delivered the graduation speech in Arabic thanking the Dean and staff. He then recognized the students' efforts to complete this long and arduous journey. Graduating senior Abdullah Al-Klthmi then gave his speech entirely in English inviting the students and faculty to reflect on the journey they had together and the difficulties they had to overcome. Abdullah advised his fellow students that their life's journey was really just beginning and many opportunities and difficulties lay on the road before them. He encouraged his fellow students to seize those opportunities and not to be overwhelmed by the challenges ahead. Graduating senior and noteworthy poet Abdulaziz Al-Shahrani offered an inspiring spoken word poetry performance thanking all faculty members of the department for helping the students succeed. The evening's festivities included a traditional dinner and social gathering. The Faculty of Languages and Translation is exceptionally proud of our graduates and honored to have participated in their education and development. Our faculty and staff eagerly anticipate stories of widespread success among these new graduates. The Kingdom will greatly benefit from the skills, abilities, and drive of these young men. New Student Orientation 2018

New students were embraced at the Level 1 Student Orientation on February 6, 2018, in the auditoriums of Building D. Incoming students were greeted with a warm welcome by the English Club and a presentation highlighting what the FLT would bring into their lives.  Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Abdullah Al-Melhi, delivered a heartfelt welcome telling all students that we are all one family.  He introduced the numerous facilities that the FLT provides to students to bolster their experience, and he encouraged students to take advantage of the expanded opportunities we offer at the FLT by completely immersing themselves into campus life and academic events. Gratitude Day at Female Campus

Believing that Gratitude is the greatest of all virtues, the English Club held "The Gratitude Event" to foster and strengthen a heightened sense of thankfulness to the blessings bestowed upon us. The program started with a fascinating lecture by Assistant Dean, Dr.Suad Al-Qahtani, entitled "Do You Know How Much You Are Rich!" Following after, numerous speeches were delivered expressing gratitude to the most prominent blessings in life along with a beautiful operetta on blessings starting with undying gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and our brave soldiers. The program continued with a touching personal dedication to fathers by Activities Coordinator, Mrs.AmatulHafeez, and Website Coordinator, Ms.Aisha Alvi. They included a surprise demonstration in front of all students where they gave a beautiful message of dedication to their father, and subsequently, he delivered a powerful and upbeat speech to the students imploring them to the value and honor their parents. Correspondingly, English Club representative students Hajar Albishri, Mashail Saad and Mashail Ali expressed gratitude to their mothers who attended the event. Haifa Al-Qahtani gave a dedication to her sister and Nora Abdullah to her friends. Towards the conclusion of the event, students of the English Club expressed their gratitude to the Assistant Dean for providing continuous support. Furthermore, Mrs. AmatulHafeez presented a commemorative memento and flowers to Dr.Suad Al-Qahtani for her unmatched guidance. Similarly, a vote of thanks was extended to all teachers by student representatives of the English Club. To conclude, a special dedication from English Club students was presented to their coordinator Mrs.AmatulHafeez for her sustained efforts and sincerity in the promotion of student activities. Al-Dhikr High School Visits the FLT Female Campus

Believing in the importance of building strong bonds with government and private educational institutions, the FLT female campus received a delegation from Al-Dhikr High School consisting of 20 grade 12 students and three teachers. The English Club held an orientation which contained informational sessions about the faculty and the English program. Welcoming the delegation, Activities Coordinator, Mrs.AmatulHafeez, expressed her heartfelt gratitude and appreciation of this initiative from the faculty's administration. English Department Supervisor, Dr.Mona Alshihry, also welcomed the delegation and emphasized that they should seize the opportunity to ask questions and have a fruitful visit. Following after, student representatives of the English Club delivered an eye-catching presentation giving the prospective students useful information and first-hand accounts of the English program. Afterwards, the English Club led prospective students on a tour of the building and introduced them to the classrooms, labs, and offices which created excitement among students. A Visit to the 14th Book and Information Fair

The English Club paid a visit to the 14th Book and Information Fair to enhance student reading skills and spread the awareness of books and knowledge. The group consisted of the Dean's Assistant, Dr. Suad Al-Qahtani, the College Coordinator of Activities and Social Services, Mrs. AmatulHafeez Alvi, the College Coordinator of Public Relations and Media, Ms. Aisha Alvi, some faculty staff and 14 students. The group visited many book corners and purchased numerous books in both English and Arabic. After the visit, Dr. Suad Al-Qahtani held a meeting with the students to listen to their opinions about the visit. The students expressed their gratitude to her for availing them to unique opportunities that are beneficial. "The book fair is amazing, the dean's assistant and lecturers are with us, and we really enjoyed and learned, " Amani said. " So beautiful, I found every book I wanted," Sara said.  "Honestly it is wonderful, there are books that suit all ages, there are different and unique books," Taif said. "The books are so amazing! The treatment is nice and quite different from a couple of book fairs I visited before," Enas said. "Had a great time with our students and colleagues, a vote of thanks goes to the Dean's Assistant, Dr. Suad, for supporting such activities, and trips which intend to develop our student's linguistic and social ability and thanks to KKU for arranging this successful fair," Mrs.AmatulHafeez, Activities and Social Services Coordinator said. Proud of My Femininity Program

Under the supervision of the Vice Presidency of Student Affairs, the Faculty of  Languages and Translation (Female Campus) participated in the program "Proud Of My Femininity" which aimed at strengthening the instinctual feminine nature and fighting the unnatural behaviors. The English Club presented a corner titled "Proud of My Look and Proud of My Innateness."  The corner included different models, brochures, and slogans. FLT Celebrates the 87th Saudi National Day

Under the supervision of Dean, Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi, celebrations to commemorate the KSA's 87th National Day were held yesterday (9/27/2017) in Building B, Auditorium 5, where students, faculty, and staff alike enjoyed a historical account of the Kingdom's history, poetry recitals, and a new student orientation program. Held in conjunction with the Annual Orientation Program, the celebration also aimed to acquaint students with the range of services available to them, academic integrity standards, and insight into what University life would be like in the Faculty of Languages and Translation. Al Melhi: We are lucky to have the Custodians of Saudi Arabia from King Abdulaziz, may Allah have mercy on him, to King Salman. Every Royal Majesty of this great nation has done his best to focus on the development of the Saudi citizen, the country itself, and education.  Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi stressed that the National Day celebration is a unifying cornerstone event. He emphasized that it gives them an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of the previous generations who set the groundwork for the stability and prosperity we all enjoy today. "We are lucky to have the Custodians of Saudi Arabia from King Abdulaziz, may Allah have mercy on him, to King Salman. Every Royal Majesty of this great nation has done his best to focus on the development of the Saudi citizen, the country itself, and education." Dr. Al Melhi added that the central theme of the FLT's Saudi National Day celebration is to invest in the students for a promising future. He encouraged them to be active, to study hard, and to remember what they learned in orientation to avoid the major pitfalls and mistakes of their Freshman Year. In an effort to drive the message home, Dr. Yahya Asiri, Vice Dean, explained that the main theme of the FLT's National Day Celebration and Annual Orientation Program was chosen to instill excellent values in our students who will participate in the nation's development and give back to society upon graduation.  He also urged students to follow the 'Code of Conduct' and to aim high in their studies. Immediately following Dr. Asiri, Chairman, Dr. Munassir Al Hamami, provided a detailed tour of the FLT website and social media accounts showing students where they could find their study plan and contact the faculty. He urged students to be aware that the transition from high school to university is not an easy one; it requires commitment and hard-work. The program this year was very productive covering all issues concerning the University. Dr. Basim Kanan, Academic Advisor, followed Dr. Al Hamami's presentation and conveyed the most important issues that students will face as well as the different ways to get in touch with him or other faculty members. Following after was Director of Student Activities, Hassan Faya Asiri, who encouraged students to join the English Club and participate in its activities. He advised students to focus on the big picture and to avoid distractions. FLT Student Receives Prestigious Award

Ahmad Al Otaibi is a student at the Faculty of Languages and Translation, and he is a journalist at Aseer News. Lately, due to his continues press and social media coverage for the Abha Charity Association and as a representative of Aseer News, he received an appreciation certificate from the Governor of the Asir Region, HRH Prince Faisal bin Khalid bin Abdulaziz. "Ahmad sets an example of how a college student can actively contribute to the community while continuously striving for academic success," said Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi, FLT Dean. New Student Orientation

Under the supervision of Dr. Abdullah Al Melhi, Dean, and represented by Dr. Abdulkhaleq Al Qahtani, Vice Dean of Higher Studies,  the English Club held an orientation for all first level students on March 5, 2017. Dr. Abdulkhaleq Al Qahtani, Dr. Mohammed Assiri, Vice Dean of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Munassir Alhamami, Chair of the English Department, Dr. Basim Kanaan, Academic Advisor, and Hassan Asiri, Director of Student Activities, presented the program. They all stressed critical points to success that included but were not limited to, helpful resources, policies, and general strategies. Dr. Abdulkhaleq Al Qahtani added that the purpose of the orientation program was to engage students and to introduce them to campus resources and opportunities. He further reasoned that a successful transition for students from their previous environment into the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) is paramount. This year’s orientation leaders were eager to share their experiences. "Orientation is the next step for students in joining the KKU FLT community," said Hassan Asiri, Director of Student Activities. “It was an opportunity to meet new students. For many of them, this was a great chance to ask questions,” said Haitham Hawi, President of the English Club. Ahmed Al Otaibi, Vice President of the English Club, remembers going through the orientation program when he first started and learned how to get involved. “I like providing assistance where it is needed,” Al Otaibi said. “Also, I wanted to let new students know about the English Club so that they can join us.” In conclusion, Dr. Abdulkhaleq Al Qahtani emphasized the importance of orientation as being key to student success. He further reiterated that we aim to support the student experience inside and outside of the classroom. Social Media Celebrities

The English Club provided a platform for a structured, intelligent, and open debate in the month of December 2016. The purpose of the debate (Social Media Celebrities) was to build critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.  Overall, many of those who attended in the audience applauded the civic awareness and engagement displayed by the debaters.  First place winner, Khalid Al Shehri (against the motion), stated “We live in a world which relies on the online world more than the reality. We need more role models, but a role model may exert a bad influence. We need to be aware of that and keep that in mind.” Second place winner, Yasser Al Shahrani (for the motion), stated “Social media celebrities are like a mirror with two sides. If it is clean, it will reflect something good and vice versa.”  Prof. Habib Abdesslem and Dr. Omer Sultan were the judges of the event and applauded the students for their persuasive arguments, fluency, and overall accuracy. Abdullah Asiri, Director of Student Activities, congratulated all students who participated in recent developments and looks forward to seeing the English Club host more in the upcoming semester.
